In March 2025, we were proud to announce the launch of our 2025-2027 strategy, a renewed commitment to strengthening public interest media in an increasingly complex digital landscape. This strategy focuses on media viability and information integrity, ensuring that public interest media can thrive while fostering an inclusive, safe, and reliable digital space for audiences worldwide.
Addressing a Changing Media Landscape
As digital platforms become the primary source of news and information for many, public interest media face increasing threats, from disinformation and censorship to declining financial support. RNW Media’s new strategy tackles these challenges by helping media organizations enhance digital media professionalism, build sustainable business models, foster strategic media coalition, partnership and movement building, and combat information disorder.
“Public interest media is under growing pressure, but its role has never been more critical,” said Wouter van Tongeren, CEO of RNW Media. “With this strategy, we are equipping media organizations with the tools they need to inform, engage, and empower their communities.”
Key Pillars: Media Viability & Information Integrity
RNW Media’s 2025-2027 strategy is built on two core pillars:
- Media Viability – Supporting public interest media to remain financially sustainable, professional, and resilient through digital innovation, strategic partnerships, and business model development.
- Information Integrity – Strengthening the fight against disinformation, promoting digital inclusion, supporting local journalism, and safeguarding online safety for media makers and their audiences.
Three cross-cutting themes we work toward are ethical technology and AI deployment, and democratic discourse on gender and migration.
Our RNW Media Approach
We prioritize two core approaches to realize our strategy. Co-creation guides our collaboration with our partners and helps ensure we engage with all stakeholders equally and meaningfully. Our data-driven strategies help us integrate insight into all stages of implementation. Both approaches are underpinned by a commitment to inclusivity, accountability, and innovation.
We operationalize those two approaches through The Vine, RNW Media’s global community, with more than 25 independent and public interest digital media, 80 media trainers, and 10,000 RNTC alumni, we facilitate media coalition, partnership, and movement building.
A Young, International Team Driving Impact
At the heart of RNW Media is a diverse and dynamic team. With staff from over 20 countries, we foster an international and collaborative environment where different perspectives drive innovation. Our young, passionate professionals bring expertise in media, technology, and advocacy, working together to create meaningful change in the digital media landscape. This diversity strengthens our ability to connect with audiences worldwide and respond effectively to global media challenges.
Looking Ahead
Over the next three years, RNW Media will work closely with its partners to drive meaningful change in the media landscape. Through this new strategy, RNW Media is reaffirming its mission to foster a diverse, resilient, and trustworthy digital media and information ecosystem that can inform people, shift narratives, influence social norms, and drive policy change, reinforcing the essential role of independent media in open and democratic societies.
